Potty Chips
So, we reached a wonderful milestone a few weeks ago in our house can you guess what it was?
Nope, it wasn't that Penelope finally learned to sew her own clothes...
{good guess though!}
It does have something to do with these pictures though!

Little Miss Penelope is POTTY TRAINED...WoooooTheFreakin'Hoooo!
It all started a few weeks ago while we were waiting in line to check out at the store and she saw a big {Grab} bag of these Cool Ranch Doritos, well rows and rows of them actually, staring back at her, taunting her and giving her the perfect opportunity to have the biggest check-out lane tantrum of her short little life. Boo to you check out lane junk food insanity if it's not candy it's the chips *said raising fist in air*! There were screams and tears and some laying down on the dirty floor tactics happening...good times. Let's just give a nod and smile to Eloise who was sleeping blissfully in her carseat shall we, since a momma only wants to handle one major tantrum at a time.
The cashier smiled and laughed and thought she was so cute, 'oh, I miss this age' she told me. Uh huh, I can't wait to miss this age ;-) Anyways...I came up with the snazz-errific idea telling her that I couldn't buy the chips today but that I would come back and buy her that WHOLE bag of chips if she started wearing underwear cause I figured that those days were a loooong ways off and the idea of having that whole bag to herself would quiet her enough so that we could get the heck out of the store. Well, she totally stopped her fit and agreed. Yay! Momma 1 Child 0.
But in the next few days boy did she prove me wrong!! Apparently the love this girl has for chips is stronger than I thought, who knew?. That little enticement was all she needed. The next day all she wanted to do was go on the potty...and the next day...and the next day. Finally I was brave enough to ask her if she wanted to wear underwear and she was all for it!! Even saying that Ellie could have all her diapers. To this day she has been wearing that precious Hello Kitty underwear with zero accidents and many public outing under her belt! She was as easy to train as Noah, what a blessing!! Now, she loves to tell us with her arms raised high above her head, 'I a big gurl. I go to preschool barn?' Cause obviously once you are potty trained that is your golden ticket into preschool, right? :-)
So finally I made good on my promise and I bought her that big bag of chips.
Oh, how excited she was to dig in...
Potty training for these...pshaw, of course.
Now she is one happy camper...
and so are we!

I got off so easily on potty training. My oldest was the most difficult, but she was in daycare and they were key in the process. The other two just decided one day that they were finished wearing diapers and that was it. Thank goodness, because I just have no patience at all.
Well, I'm a mom of 3 boys. The first one (now 5) loved trains and we happened to have a train at a local park that operated during the summer ($1 per ride), so he earned "train dollars" for his potty training. I think we said earning 4 or 5 got him a ride. Number 2 potty training was a lot more work (I guess afraid to sit and get rid of that big stuff?!).
Now I'm trying to work with our second boy (who is 2 1/2 and has a will of his own...."my own terms, please!"). Still wondering how we're ever gonna get him to go steadily.

My first, a girl now 4, was SO EASY! She just started pretending on the little potty we sat out and eventually the pretending turned into the real thing. Now I'm just starting to think about my second, a boy who's 2.5. The boy thing is a little daunting and he's so easy going he seems like he'll be happy in diapers till he's eight!
But there is NOTHING cuter than seeing their little tushes in underwear for the first time. Bye Bye Diaper Bootie and Hello Big Kid! Maybe I'll buy some Iron Man underwear to entice him.... Such cutie pix of your little one!
THIS is a great day indeed! I'm a mom of 4 and now a gma. Even though my 'baby' is 17 yrs old; you never forget the excitement of toilet training conquered!! Congrats! I laughed out loud, the pics are so great...but not as great as her name. THAT'S MY MIDDLE NAME! And my oldest daughter's too!
YAY!!! Congrats :) and, we are working on this at my house as we speak! So far m&m's are incentive. Although, I think she has figured out a way to use the system. Pee a little bit, get a m&m. Pee a little bit more in 5-10 mins, get another... boo to my smart little girl ;) How old is your little cutie?
OMG you got off easy!! I started by taking them to the potty at intervals.. 30 minutes.. and they would go. I would give them a hug and a kiss.. and appreciate their big efforts.. then set the timer.. and take them again. If they had an accident.. re-set the timer.. It worked for all my kids.. and all the daycare kids. Once they got it at 30 minutes I moved the timer to 45 minutes.. and before I knew it they were going in there on their own because they were tired of me asking them if they had to go potty..
O you are so lucky! Im going through potty training with my girls right now and its crazy! My oldest 2 1/2 likes to just hang out on the potty she could sit there all day and shes content just sitting there. My younger is 1 1/2 and shes more on the timer type system and shes somewhat catching on, a lil more than her sister unfortunitly. Hopefully they'll encourage each other through it though.
I love the Doritos! Too funny! My son's thing was pretzel m&m's. I'm all about bribery to get out of diapers! Congrats!
Congratulations!!! Mine was just potty trained a couple of weeks ago. Her major incentive was the Valentine M&Ms. She loves her "pink candy" so much.
i HOPE we have it that easy when we need to go through that!
I love your story. I have a wee bit of time before my little guy is out of diapers though :)
My sister used preschool as an incentive for my niece. By the end of the summer she was in big girl pants and loving school. She still does and is a great helper too.
I love that she was excited about the chips. And who could blame her, cool ranch chips are the cat's meow. That is exactly why I avoid the chip isle in my grocery store! No chips in the house mean not chips on my hips :)
Good luck with the last one. I will keep my fingers crossed that she is as easy as your other two.
That is wonderful news :) Potty training is always so much fun....lol. With our daughter, we used a sticker reward system. Every time that she would use the potty she got to put up a sticker on her chart. After she accumulated a certain number of stickers in two weeks, she was able to go to the store and pick out a prize. Once we got that established, she was potty trained in just a couple of weeks.
I am so glad that we have a while before our little man needs potty trained, but I am sure we will have to be creative about that as well.
I've trained 5 of my own so far...2 to go. Skittles and DumDums have been our rewards. :)
I had no such luck. Perhaps it was because I was training twins. I tried just about any gimmick I could think of, but no easy route for me. At long last, we are done. And incidentally, shout out for the pink IKEA potty chairs. Cheap and super easy to clean. And pink, did I mention that? Congrats to you and Penelope! ~Ethne

Loved your story! My kids are in their 30's now, so I forget HOW we accomplished it, but I do remember the feelings of relief at the success. Congrats to Penelope... and YOU!
I tried everything I could think of to potty-train my son (now 4) and he just could not be bribed. He finally got it though. For my 2-year-old girl, she just started going on her own right before she turned 2. I didn't even have to try!

Awesome! My son just potty trained too. He had to fill up a chart for a trip to Disneyland (we have passes) to get a Buzz Lightyear gun. His next chart is accident free days, which should be pretty quick to fill up. I guess boys just have more accidents than girls from what other mommy's have been telling me.
AWESOME!!! My oldest was easy, once we decided it was time...it took him the weekend! We were planning a trip to Disney World during the time we were trying to train my 2nd (he used the potty at daycare NO PROBLEM but refused at home) so we told him he couldn't go to see Mickey Mouse if he didn't use the potty (worked like a charm!). However, now he thinks we get to go back to Disney World once his sister is trained.

We used Gummy Bears, and boy do they work!
I bribed potty training for my youngest with a new Dora dvd...she was trained in a day.
A few weeks ago we were working on star chart to get an entire bag of Cheetos for not crying at bedtime. It worked and she wanted to know if she could eat them for breakfast...of course she did!
Wow! Impressive! Haven't hit the potty training yet but we do have to bribe Ansley to give us kisses with tic tacs. ha. Double ha b/c she's totally into tantrum stage. Love your description of it.
The little boy I nanny for is working through the potty training phase with yogurt covered raisins as his incentive...
What a precious story and little one... I agree with how cute their little bums look in underwear. I'm a grandmother of two little girls.. and I know what you are feeling. When the oldest was (and still is) training I used Dora the Explorer stickers... work like a charm :)

I promised my daughter 1 hour of naked running around time if she went potty all day. That kid loved (actually still loves) to be nekkid!

Wow, congratulations on being one of the lucky ones. that did that so fast and easy. My Kids weren't all that hard and they are grown now.
This whole post brought back lots of memories, but the first few photos of her in the hello kitty undies by the sewing machine are so cute. Potty training was such an episode with my son that I've blocked out all memories of it and SO easy with my daughter that all we had to do was ask her and she was all trained.

My little miss Nicole was one of those kids who are so difficult that you suddenly find yourself tempted to go back to diapers your own self. And then one day I took away all her clothes from the waist down and put the potty in the middle of the livingroom. She had NEVER peed on it at this point - just sat on it for ages either smiling or giving me angryface - but she potty trained herself in one day that day. OF COURSE. Little goober has learned every stinkin thing she knows that way - kicking and screaming the whole way, and then teaching herself when I pretty much give up.
Bribery works wonders. ;)
My son was troublesome until the day I asked him if he wanted to stand up like Daddy. That was all she wrote!

My oldest thought the pull-ups were the same as diapers, he would NOT go potty. I went and bought him underwear and told him they were big boy pants, and he couldn't pee-pee in big boy pants because big boys go potty. And if he wanted to be a big boy (with a baby sister on the way) he had to act like a big boy!! He had one or two accidents, and it was easy sailing from there. It also helps that we live in the middle of no-where, and he would just pee outside if he had to go. We stayed outside A LOT!
Wow!! So many awesome ideas for potty training...you ladies rock it something awesome!! For those that have asked, Penelope just turned 2 1/2!! So happy...now if we can just have it this easy with Eloise :-)

You said your son was easy. Do you have a few pointers on what you did with him? I am in the middle of training my son. We are doing better, but we are still a long ways off.

Holy WOW! I had a similar immediate response with the promise of big girl panties. My oldest started to strip down in Kohl's when we told her we would buy her Sesame Street underwear.
Bag of Doritos for incentive? $3.29.
Potty trained in less than a week? Priceless.

Great! My daughter we bribe with TV, which she never gets to watch! Also, I have to point out because I love love love that alphabet shirt...did you notice it's got a typo? It's missing the 'O'!
@Stephanie-You know my son was just a few months shy of three when I brought it up to him...he was all for it and just did it. We had tried for a day here and there previous to that but he just didn't care, so we didn't push it..then one day he was all "sure, I'm in"... I think when they are ready they are ready...not that that is the greatest advice but just what worked for us! Good Luck!!
