It's no surprise that I am a huge Starbucks fan as many of you have seen from my random iPhone pictures I upload every now and again on Facebook (ahem, like the ones below!)
And of course, I shared this post here about visiting enough times to achieve gold card status. Yup that's me :-)
There is just something so delish about Starbucks; I love going there, especially when I have gift cards to blow, and knowing, always knowing, that my drink order will be exactly the way I like it. There is just something comforting about knowing what you are getting, right?
My go-to cold drink is their Iced Chai Latte with soy milk. My go-to hot drink is a White Chocolate Mocha with soy milk. Yum, I kinda want one now.
In honor of Starbucks bringing back their Tribute Blend, for a limited time, I wanted to share a little story of how we honor the important little people in our life, our kids, when they go out of their way to be extra helpful or loving.
Y'all know we have 3 kids with one on the way, right?
Well if you have more than one kid you know how very hard it can be to spend quality time with just one of them.
What my husband and I try to do is have a little one-on-one parent/kid time with each of them. It's especially fun to do when they are being good listeners or helpers, and we want to show them how thankful we are that they are helping our family by doing so.
Sometimes it's just the simple act of taking one of them to the grocery store (and my how nice is doing that with just one kid instead of three!) or even to Target to pick up a few necessities. If I have Penelope to myself for a few hours we may even hit up a nail salon for mommy-daughter manis!
Most trips end with a nice little snack at a restaurant of their choice for a little more heart-to-heart conversation. I LOVE doing this with each of my kids! It's really fun to see their personalities shine without their other siblings trying to get attention too. And I love to hear what they have to tell me about themselves, what interests they currently have, and what's on their mind.
I have to chuckle as I write this next part, but honestly it's true...many times my kids will actually pick Starbucks cause they love their birthday cake pops. It's the perfect little treat for them as it looks like a lollipop, has sprinkles, and is just their size, plus they are pretty tasty :-) I'll order a cake pop for each of us along with a kid's size hot chocolate or apple juice for them and one of my go-to drinks for me.
So, would you like to win a $100 gift card to spend at Starbucks? To be entered for a chance to win, courtesy of Starbucks and BlogHer, just tell me something you do to pay tribute to the special people in your life.

XOXO,

I pay tribute to my grandpa (who died 8 years ago today) by making my kids pancakes for breakfast. They were his favorite and I remember many a fond morning eating at his table with him.
ReplyDeleteanna_marie_johnson at yahoo dot com
I pay tribute to my grandmothers by being sure to make their special recipes for my son. My family is Italian so food was always used as a symbol of love. I'm happy to share those traditions with my son.
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my kids when they do something special without being asked by making a big deal out of it and letting them know how much I really appreciate their kindness and thoughtfulness! chris98730 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI also try to do special time with each child. I have four also, and my baby is already 15. But it has been wonderful and now my youngest daughter (almost 18) always chooses to go grocery shopping with mom and LOVES to hang out.
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my dear grandmother by telling stories about her to my three children. She died when my youngest was still a baby. My older children have very vague memories of her. She was a great woman and I love to remember my days with her.
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my husband. Every week we have our oldest son watch the other 4 kiddos and I take him on a date. Re-connecting from the busy week s something we look forward to.
ReplyDeleteI take lots of photos of people and make sure I email/mail copies to them.
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my gran and my extended family by carrying on family traditions. Baking the same cakes for my grandpa, having the same potatoes at christmas... and just remembering...It is so wonderful to keep these traditions alive, and to be able to pass them on to our future families...
ReplyDeleteI am trying to spend special quality time with each child individually. This is something I still need to work on. Never thought about taking them to Starbucks!
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my mother by always telling my kids how far she came from such humble beginnings.
ReplyDeletemami2jcn at gmail dot com
We have one child now, a wonderful 14 month old but I will have to remember this post for (hopefully) future children. Now I pay tribute to the special people in my life by trying to connect with them individually: date nights with husband, quality one on one time with my daughter.

My daughter is an only child but we still go on mommy/daughter outings!! I do it to show her that I am proud of her and that I enjoy our quality time together!! She is my whole world and I love spending time with her just the two of us but we also have a great time as a family!! :)
ReplyDeleteI think our next outing might be to get a mani/pedi during spring break when she is done with softball camp!! :)
We pay tribute to my grandpa every Christmas eve by carrying on his tradition of getting all of the family together for a traditional Polish dinner, christmas carols and then presents!!!
ReplyDeleteI was very close to my grandmother who passed shortly before I married. My husband and I shared a lot with her in time and in events. We will do some of these things together that we did with my grandmother when we feel that we need to get back to basics and feel a renewal.
ReplyDeletemsgb245 at gmail dot com
nice! :)
ReplyDeleteI put cute notes in the lunch boxes of my husband and school-age son. Sometimes they're elaborate cards, sometimes I just write "Hi" on a sandwich. We also have three kids and I must admit my husband is far better at one-on-one time with each of them than I am; leave me alone with just one and we tend to stare at each other with looks that say, "Okay... what do we do now?" ;)
ReplyDeleteI tweeted too!!

I pay tribute to my Mom who passed away two years ago by trying to spend as much quality time with my daughters as possible. I know if my Mom were here she would be spending time with me and her granddaughters and I try to make up for it by doing special things with them, all while thinking of my Mom.
ReplyDeleteWe love going to Starbucks for Birthday Cake Pops too-- the girls LOVE them! Well, I do too! :)
I like to love on my loved ones with little surprises--a card in the mail or a favorite candy bar is such a small thing, but can mean a lot!
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to the loved ones in my life by sweet little random notes of love. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my husband by making time for just the two of us at least once a week. We try to get out of the house for a date night at least 2x a month, but some weeks we have time only for an "in-house" date night once the baby is in bed. We both love and enjoy this time together; whether it's dinner out, in, or just cuddling and watching a movie together.
ReplyDeleteI love mommy dates with my girls too. It's funny how a simple errand is perceived as special time when there is just one child and parent. My youngest likes to go to Costco and have samples while chatting. And my oldest loves "coffee" dates.
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my special ones by staying home and trying to keep my cool. :) my husband loves Starbucks and I'd love to win this for him.
ReplyDeleteI always think of my mom when I am crocheting. She was a very busy RN, but found time to crochet for her seven children and grandkids. All of us have a bedspread and/or other pieces that she made special. I feel I pay a tribute to her as I work on my crochet goodies, too!
ReplyDeletePicnic time is when I pay tribute to my littles. We eat all day, but when it's on a floral quilt in the sunshine giggles are evoked and sweet moments provoked. It's my way of doing something out of the ordinary, to show the kids how out of the ordinary my love for them is. Man, think we'll go ahead and picnic today! ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for this opportunity! With my oldest daughter, I would get a Starbuck's drink for me and a snack for her on the days I had to close at the office and I would bring her back with me. Now with 2 little ones we might stop by on our visit to Target to keep little people engaged with one of their new Cherry pies (YUM!) and some coffee while mama shops! :)
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my grandparents by carrying on some of our traditions to my children. I pass down some of the same good food by making their recipes and letting them "feel" their great grandparents love that I got as a child!
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my Grandmother adn Great Grandmother by teaching my children to sew. (And my grandfather who owned an upholstery shop and also taught us to sew.) My daughter turned 16 and she got a new sewing machine for her birthday and we have started making a quilt. My grandmother taught me and now I am teaching my daughter. I also read the rules but the link to click to follow through wouldn't work.
ReplyDeleteI don't work of Fridays, so I keep my daughter home from preschool and we go to Starbucks for breakfast. She even has her own insulated cup and she orders her own milk and a turkey bacon breakfast sandwich, while I order my latte and oatmeal. She loves sitting in the big comfy chairs to eat and everyone there seems to get such a kick out of it! She loves the ritual and feeling like she is a bit "grown up" (even though she is only 3!)
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I have two kids and we also take them on one on one dates. They love it. I took my son to a movie and his special treat was popcorn. Then we went and got a frosty! My husband LOVES Starbucks and he can't get it most of the time because it's so expensive, so we would LOVE to win this gift card.
ReplyDeleteI love that you take each of your kiddos out and spend time with them separately! I hope to do that more as my three get older, but we're an hour from town. For now, I make sure to shut my laptop down and cuddle each of my boys. I try to consciously stop what I'm doing and get down on their level and play what they want to play. I also take the time to write a little note on my husband's napkin in the lunch I pack him every day. It's so easy to take each other for granted! Thanks for this reminder and the opportunity to win!
ReplyDeleteWe LOVE Starbucks! We go everyday for a Viente sugar free vanilla latte, iced with whip!
ReplyDeleteYum

I've never tried the tribute blend but it sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteexactly what you do with your kiddos...I honor them by spending time with them. Listening to them, laughing with them. It's the best way to show tribute to someone you love.
ReplyDeleteexactly- by spending quality time with your kiddos- i talk to them about their nanny

ReplyDeleteWhen the kids are so sick that it requires a trip to the doctor's office and a prescription, I let them pick out something small while we wait for the pharmacy to fill the script. My 5 year old has acquired 2 mini webkins stuffed animals just in the last few months! Darn strep!
I pay tribute to my husband who supports me wtih amm fabric addiction and craft mess. He is also the leader of our home, I thank God for giving me a loveing and Godly husband. :)

My Mom was recently let go from her job which was terribly hard for her emotionally. She is a hard worker and never missed a day of work, even when she sprained her ankle while at work. She is almost 65 years old and she was devastated, especially since they did it the day she returned after Christmas. My Mom is an amazing cook and to show my appreciation, and that her love of cooking was passed on, I have her over a couple times a week now for great home cooked meals :) I know it is helping her by knowing she isn't alone and that we are all here for her!
ReplyDelete(Melinda L. mnottoli@sbcglobal.net)
I pay tribute to my grandma that passed away years ago, by making frog eye salad or cherry cheese pie during the holidays for everyone, she made it every year and I'm hoping to pass on recipes to my kids.
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my own grandmothers, my daughters Ethiopian grandmothers, and my mom by writing a cookbook with their recipes, notes, and photos for my daughters! I come from a great family tree full of women. :)
ReplyDeleteBirthdays around here are full of tributes...according to my kids, it is NOT a birthday cake unless it has Aunt Nancy Icing on it (and I thank her each time for sharing her secret recipe with me lol). All cakes are served on my grandma's glass cake stand that she gifted me when downsizing. We remember the birth *time* which is my mom's tradition. I tell Mom thank you for giving me life and teaching me how to love. Birthdays are special because we honor the one celebrating and remember those who came before.
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my husband and my son by giving them unexpected gifts and taking them on dates

I pay tribute to my momma! The most inspirational woman I know!
ReplyDeleteI would pay tribute to my wonderful husband who has been working on 24/7 call for the last 8 months, comes home tired and plays with the kids without a peep so I can get some time to myself.
ReplyDeleteWe have family game nights for the kids for when they have been really good. Old-fashioned family nights, with special treats (like popcorn or something mom and girls baked), board/card games of their choice and lots of fun with each other. And yes, those cake pops are awesome. My kids adore them.
ReplyDeleteAlthough our family lives far away, I pay tribute to them by filling my home with family photos. It keeps them close to us.
ReplyDeleteI am a stay at home grandma watching my daughters children. She is a police officer and I like to bring her a hot chocolate now and then. She is awesome!
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to those I love by making their favorite meal or dessert.
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my family by making time to just hang out toghether. We enjoy doing fun active things together. I love Starbucks too!

ReplyDeleteI love to bake them something special - something homemade - especially bread!
ReplyDeleteI'm laughing really hard right now. I do special one on one dates with my kids, and the boys ALWAYS ask to go to Starbucks. One of Jack's first words was, "Tarducks". Better than "McDonald's" being one of his first words, right?!?! Anyways, my mother-in-law just retired from teaching this past year. To pay tribute to her many years of service as a dedicated and passionate teacher, we bought a "tribute brick" outside of my son's elementary school in her honor. The neat thing about choosing my son's elementary school was that it just happened to be the elementary school my mother-in-law went to school at as a young girl! She always said it was there, in that elementary school, that she knew one day she'd grow up and be a teacher.
ReplyDeleteMy family and I pay tribute to my grandparents by visiting their grave every year and having an extended family dinner in remembrance of them
ReplyDeleteCake pops are one of the best thing Starbucks ever did. . .my 3 year old LOVES them! Whenever we go to our play group, we drive through and he gets a cake pop and I get my usual drink. One fun way I like to honor my kiddos is to get them something special at the grocery when I do my shopping. It's never anything big but a box of tic tacs or a new kind of cereal lets them know I think of them when I do my "chores".
ReplyDeleteMy cousin and I are really close so I try to pay tribute to her a few times a year (she lives on the other side of the country). We'll mail treats, birthday gifts, or baby gifts. She's completely claimed my children as her nephews which I love and now that she has a little one, I love paying tribute to her as well.
ReplyDeleteI try to make sure I let my family know I love them everyday. Our life is nuts right now with a 5yr old, 4yr old, and twins that are 4 months so sometimes that means just a few minutes of cuddling, reading, singing, or making dinner together, but whatever it is, no matter how short, it's done with so much love...
ReplyDeletewhen the family gathers I pay tribute to my Mom who went home to our Heavenly Father 28 years ago. Whenever the family would gather my Mom would make her Enchiladas. No one could make them like she did and it is my way of having her in our mist at family gatherings.
ReplyDeletei pay tribute to the kids when they do good by making them a special dinner!:)

ReplyDeleteI just had my 2nd child recently and am starting to realize how important it is to also give my 2 year old his own special time. I haven't had a chance to do anything as of yet, but I'm planning on a few "dates" over the next few months. sarah.g.ortiz [at] gmail [dot] com

ReplyDeleteYou sound so much like me!! I have a Gold card (2x over), I've received 3 free drinks off of it, so that's like 45+ cups of coffee over the last 2 years. hehehehe My daughter loves the birthday cake pops, too.
ReplyDeleteI try to send cards to my parents and grandmother from my son to pay tribute to them.
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my mom by cooking her recipes that were handed down to me, teaching them to my husband, and then someday to our kids. It makes her happy to know she is a part of our lives. :)

ReplyDeleteI try to spend lots of one on one quality time with them and also take lots of pictures :)
ReplyDeleteWe try to encourage and show love in how we treat each other.
ReplyDeleteTo show tribute to my family, I like to bake for them:)
ReplyDeleteI love giving home baked goods to pay tribute to those I love!
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my 3 kiddos by trying to honor who they are as individuals, spending time with each of them (without siblings) like you posted about. Each kid loves to do something totally different than the others. My oldest loves when I spend time outdoors with him. My middle loves me to listen to him tell me all about Star Wars or Indiana Jones. My youngest and only girl loves to play dress up and also have me hold her endlessly! In the warmer months I pay tribute to them by working hard to grow food in our garden. They learn so much and we enjoy being together in this way. Starbucks is not somewhere my kids and I go often, but we LOVE it! It would be such a blessing to win a gift card! :)
ReplyDeleteI have recently started sewing and I try to find ideas on websites like yours to make items to show people my appreciation for things they do for me, my family or for just being a wonderful person.

ReplyDeleteWe pay tribute to each other and our kids who are mostly grown by taking everyone out to Starbucks every Friday after work. It's our reward for making it through the week. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy kids love Starbucks too, so glad they cater to more than just us coffee lovers! My husband and I pay tribute to our kids by spending quality time with them and encouraging them in positive ways. Children are our legacy!

ReplyDeleteI try to pay tribute to those special in my life with the time I spend with them, cooking something special for them, or a special meal out. I love to encourage those around me!!! ...because I am so blessed by them! :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I spend quality time together at home every weekend without the tv or computers on.
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my support staff by buying them small treats- coffee, flowers, etc. every so often and writing cards to let them know how great they are!
ReplyDeleteWe have 3 boys and always try to take them out for a special treat by themselves once a month. It makes things a little less crazy having just the one on one time.
ReplyDeleteI try to take advantage of the alone time I get with my girls. For my youngest (4 months), she simply loves extra kisses and cuddles. For my almost 3 year old, it's always something different: shopping, play time, movie night. I try to do something special for my loved ones daily to show them how important they are!
ReplyDeleteWe do a lot of 'hip hip hoorays!' anytime someone does something great around here.
ReplyDeletei pay tribute to my mom by doing something small every day to honor her memory. example - my 2yr old loves veggie straws , growing up .. one of the things that was big in our house was friday night because it was 'chips for snack!' (snack before bedtime) and i say this now when lily and i share a few veggie chips. just little things like that that will allow my daughter to know the grandpa who is her angel keeping her safe.
ReplyDeleteSimilar to you, I pay tribute to my kids by making sure each one gets a little "Mommy and Me" time each week. They love it and really look forward to having their own special time! andrea.robinson@yahoo.com

ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my parents by buying my mom coffee from you guessed it Starbucks! She watches my LO for free while I work part-time so its the least I can do. Then when I make my super awesome brownies I always bring a few for my dad who is a brownie fanatic. Without the two of them I would be a world of trouble.
ReplyDeleteI stop whatever it is that I need to do and color or play with playdough with my girls. mrs.jeffery@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my family by always letting them eat off the "company" dishes on Saturday mornings when I make all of their favourite breakfast foods.

I try to give handmade gifts to those that are special in my life. I want them to feel the love that went into the gift. Thanks for the great giveaway - who doesn't love Starbucks?!
ReplyDeleteTribute to teachers, the most important adult after parents to kids, by randomly bringing them Starbucks vanilla lattes or chocolate shakes.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I don't get a lot of "special" time with each of my kids-I do most of my errands while my older son is at kindergarten, or on the weekends. But, I did try to do something special at Christmas... I took each of them to pick out a present for Daddy, and on the way stopped at Starbucks, and they each got to pick a treat.
ReplyDeleteTribute to my amazing husband... I can't imagine the last three months with our newborn without him!
ReplyDeleteWell, you had me at "Starbucks," but the gift card part!?! Wow, thanks for the chance. We have 4 kids. The youngest is now 11 & the oldest is off at college--it gets easier to spend quality time with them as they get older, mainly because it gets more rare to have them all home at once. I just get to "hang" with whoever is here! LOL As for tributes? I love to have the house clean & a special snack for the kids to come home to from school; I also really enjoy making a great meal almost every night for them, esp for the dh. He deserves to come home to that. :o)
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my late parents by reminding my daughter of the fun stories of how my Mom and Dad affected her life. Hopefully she will do the same with her children.
ReplyDeleteWe pay tribute to our young girls by going to the park, the beach, or even just the library--it is very special to them to have any outings for fun with both of us working f/t.
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my mother by calling her and thanking her for being such a great mom. Whenever I am reminded of a difficult part of my own childhood as I see my 12 year old daughter go through something similar - I now try to see it from my mom's point of view and realize what a wonderfully supportive person she is and how she always managed things so well. I learn from her every day how to be a great mom!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! We have one on one date nights at home. One child will get to stay up later watch a movie with us of their chice and have special snacks that they pick out. They love this time and so do we:)
ReplyDeleteI have two besties who have lost children at a young age. One has lost two and the other one. I remember their children in heaven's birthdays and homegoing days. Whether with a note or a call or an email, they tell me each year how much it means to them that I remember especially as years go by.
ReplyDeleteI'm thankful for the faithfulness of these friends as they've walked through hard times.

I pay tribute to my family by creating scrapbooks for each of them. Hopefully when each of my 5 children 'leave the nest' and marry, they will recieve these scrapbooks and look back at all the wonderful times and memories that were made.
ReplyDeleteEverey evening one of us brings the little one into his bed, and then the "Special time" for the great one beginns: she choose what we´re doing in this time: reading the long stories an books (if the little one is around it´s nearly impossible to read the longer books and stories^^), or we play games, drwaing... she´s enjoing her special time verry much!
ReplyDeleteAnd the little one has his special time every morning, when the great one is in the kindergarden-since he can walk, he like going outside and look, what there grows, looking the fields when the tractors drive...
And once a month the great one can choose who makes a verry special time with her-mommy or daddy. and then we go to cinema, theatre, doll-theatre, museum... the little one and the one, who ist not having special time with the great one are doing something special for little ones-he´s to small/young for going in that theatres the great one likes...^^

My husband and I are paying tribute to our favorite family members. His grandmother, who we lost last year after too many battles with cancer. She was definitely such a great woman to be around, I had only known her for 3 years, but I know she was a magnificent woman. The other family member we're paying tribute to is my grandmother, she with her husband have helped raise me since I grew up with a single mother who worked very long factory shifts. We're naming our little girl after both his grandmother Alice, and my grandmother Priscilla. It's a secret though, the name is under wraps until our families get to meet our little girl in July.
ReplyDeleteI would love to receive a Starbucks gift card for some decaf handcrafted drinks, that definitely help this pregnant lady get through her day!

I pay tribute to the people I love by telling them so. Let them know you appreciate them and love them, and mean what you say. It’s always nice to spend quality time with those I love and look back to the memories we share and create more sweet memories together.

We pay tribute to my mom by trying (and never quite succeeding!) to replicate her amazing blueberry coffee cake. After she passed, we tried in vain to find her recipe book with all of it's handwritten favourites - if there was anything I wanted, that was it. Sometimes, I look up and say "okay, Mom, are you going to tell me today where that recipe is?".
ReplyDeleteI like to cook for my loved ones. I cook for my mom whenever she needs a pick me up, and we like to visit grandma and cook for her as well. Nothing is better than a home cooked meal - well - maybe Starbucks!
ReplyDeletei write a letter! there is nothing like being able to express my love for my mama or sister and cheer them on than with a colorful pen and a homemade note card.

ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to people by making things for them. Usually that means baking a favorite food item, or sometimes sewing up something they need. I love to give people things I've made and gifts usually make people happy. :o)
ReplyDeleteFor my husbands grandma, I've collected her old photos & I'm scanning them. I've also interviewed her on video & will put a video together for the whole family.

ReplyDeleteI try to honor those close to me by doing little things each day to make their lives a little easier and happier. I will do the dishes for my roommates, cook dinner for a friend, pick up the tab, compliment them, any little thing that will subtly make their day better. I hope that by doing this frequently, their overall happiness will increase more than if they were to get a big gift one time.

ReplyDeleteI honor and celebrate my families accomplishments by using the special red plate that says "you are special today". I serve favorite meals to that person on the plate and we write on the bottom what we are celebrating and the date so we can look back.

ReplyDeletePick me, pick me! Most often when I want to treat my loved ones to something special and honor them, believe it or not, I either take them to or pick them up a Starbucks! Really!!!!! I also cook their favorite food or bake their favorite treat!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was little, My mom would take each of the 4 girls out on their own special mommy daughter day. That was awesome. While I have not been able to have children of my own yet, I do believe in telling people I love them often. I tell my husband every single day and make sure they know, I am telling them so often, because I never want them to forget or every wonder.

We try to do special outings with our boys. My husband takes our 4 yr old boy to basketball games or we take the boys (4 & 2yrs) out for Ice cream or special treats every so often. It's a joy to see their delight in being treated special.

ReplyDeleteleave a card in his coat or briefcase for him to find at work during the day. for my son, lots of hugs and games!
ReplyDeleteI'm a single teacher, so the kids I teach are "my kids". Some of the ways I make my junior high kids feel special is by making compliments on their appearance (especially if they just got their hair or nails done - hey, at this age it's a REALLY big deal and even older, we all like to look good, you know?). I tease them to make them laugh, or make an extra effort to just say something that lets them know that I noticed them today. I want them to feel like they are accepted and loved the minute they walk in the door. I'll invite some kids that are having a rough day to eat lunch with me just to get away from the loudness of the lunchroom. It's nice to just be in a smaller, quieter setting with your friends sometimes. Or I write notes on their graded assignments ... something to make them smile or improve their work so that they'll do better next time.
ReplyDeleteI posted about this on Facebook!
ReplyDeleteI pay tribute to my grandmother who passed away three years ago by whipping up her special Christmas cookies every year. Not as good as she makes them but her recipes make me feel close to her.

I like to send a note to those special people in the mail, to let them know i'm thinking about them. For kids I usually mail it in a plastic bottle, it's a big hit!
