Tape Dispenser Makeover-TUTORIAL
For lack of a better title, that is what this project really is...a Tape Dispenser Makeover. Yup, true story. I bought a few ugly black tape dispensers at the Dollar Store awhile back to help out my washi tape obsession and just couldn't handle the plain-ness and the boring-ness of them. Blech, no good. They just weren't pretty. You know me, I like pretty. Even if an object has a run-of-the-mill job like cutting tape it still needs to look pretty in my book. Plus, prettifying them makes these little guys fit in my sewing studio a whole lot better :-)
A bit of a before and after picture for you.
See, so much better! Can you believe the Dollar Store sells these babies for a buck? Such a steal! And perfect for washi tape :-)
This project seriously only takes a couple of hours and that is just because of the drying time of the primer and the paint. Yes, you probably could do without the priming but why take a chance? For minimal time investment you will have these pretties on your desk looking all gorgeous and personalized with your choice of fun colors. Can't beat that!
They look like they cost so much more than a dollar, don't they?
I think I need to make more...pretty tape dispensers for everyone!
Here's a peek at my washi tape station in my new studio. A little bit of heaven on earth for this huge organization junkie! I love everything to have it's place.
I found this vintage soda crate at a flea market a couple of months ago for only $5, such a bargain. I just love the look of it, the paint is worn juuuuust right. For a small while I had my kids art supplies in it but it was just getting too messy and disorganized for my liking so I found a new life for it in my studio soon after...lucky me!
And yes, I'm just realizing that I haven't shared any pictures of my new studio with you. I will soon, promise. We put it together right before Oliver was born and it just completely slipped my mind until now. Mommy brain...anyone else have that right about now? I'm not sure how I've been getting along this far with my amazing lack of memory these days. Kids, I tell you! Maybe it's better that I don't remember some things, like Eloise drawing on our carpet the other day, ha!
Thanks for stopping by today!
XOXO,

I LOVE your painted tape dispensers! Will you share which dollar store you bought them at? We have 3 nearby and would love to get a couple! I have the same soda crate-off to organize my washi tape-thanks for the inspiration!
Love the dispensers and that soda crate....WOW!!!!!
Hi Karen!
I use the tape for everything! I let the kids design thank you or birthday cards with it, I use it to make them little blank paper books to draw in, it's great for to make party decor out of (like little flags on toothpicks or mini bunting on twine) and my all time favorite: we use it to hang their artwork on the walls instead of scotch tape because it comes off so much nicer!
I bought them at the actual "Dollar Store", lol! It's funny how many types there actually are!
Thanks Lindy! :-)
Love the tape, the dispensers, the organization. Love! I now have ideas for my teeny little work space. =)
What a great idea! I LOVE washi tape and have quite the collection too. I think I may invest in a few dispensers from the Dollar Tree as well. Cute makeover! Thanks for sharing!
Great idea, Maggie! Your trio looks adorable. I spray painted my 3M shoe tape dispenser a few years ago because it was red and looked terrible on my desk. Black spray paint made it so much better!
I love, love, love your Washi tape storage solution. I dream of finding a vintage soda crate like this one day. They are so much fun!
I would definitely like to have a peek into your studio if this is just the way you store tape :)
Amazing! I think I'm going to try something like this. I only just started my washi tape collection too, so it's great to have found this today!
The soda crate is a STEAL at $5!!! Way to go! And spray paint is magic isn't it???
I love this idea! I have at least a dozen rolls of washi tape and I want one of these for every roll! Thanks for the inspiration :) Off to the dollar store :)
So beautiful! I am jealous!
I absolutely love those dispensers ... I'll be running to the dollar store this week!
Hi Maggie, I love the tape dispensers, very cute, and I am very envious of the little shelves they are kept in! Equally I am intrigued by the thread holder you show in the pictures. Could we have more info on that, it looks a lovely way to store threads? Mine are currently jumbled up in a box!
Sweet! Love the dispensers and the crate rocks! I have a coke crate like that but mine does not have the dividers. Will keep an eye out for one of those. Craft supply storage is so much cooler using unique displays like this!
They are lovely. Did you mask or remove the silver teeth when painting?
I love this idea! I was wondering where you get your washi tape? Do you have a favorite place to buy from, or just pick them up at different places. A source to order from would be best, I don't live very close to any hobby stores. Thanks!
The little shelves are part of a vintage soda crate. And the thread holder is something I picked up a Joann's, I love it as it keeps it all nicely organized!!
I totally agree!
I put a tiny piece of painter's tape on the silver teeth before spray painting!
I get a lot of my washi from Michael's and Target and for an online source Pick Your Plum has great deals on it every other week or so! You can also try Downtown Tape as an online source too! Have fun!
Oops! I meant the "Dollar Tree"!!!!
My GAWD that is CUTE!
These are so fun..LOVE the colors!
